The Goblin Market: Beneath Far Gondal's Foreign Sky
Green Monkey Records (GM1012)

Beneath Far Gondal's Foreign Sky is the third album by The Goblin Market, and this time The Green Pajamas members Jeff Kelly and Laura Weller have been inspired by the writings of the Brontë sisters from the 19th century England. The music is still very atmospheric, peaceful and influenced by both classical music, folk and psychedelic rock. The album is dedicated to the late Tony Dale (Camera Obscura) who released the two first The Goblin Market albums as well as lots of other amazing music, of course.

The disc starts off with the very soft and small-scale ”The Night Is Darkening Around Me” that is mostly based on piano, keyboards and the exquisite vocals of Jeff and Laura. It has a romantic and melancholic mood. The more guitar-driven, excellent and strong ”Remembrance” resembles more The Green Pajamas and is one of my favorites on the album. “The Lock” is again a softer, beautiful and sad song with acoustic guitar and piano. ”The Night Wind” keeps up the same style but in a bit more positive spirit. Another laid-back song ”Tell Me, Tell Me, Smiling Child” sort of brings to mind Renaissance and Kate Bush, ”Song (the Linnet in the Rocky Dells)” rocks out a bit more. The magnificent ”High Waving Heather” has been previously heard as a little different version on The Green Pajamas’ amazing Seven Fathoms Down and Falling album (1999) and the track still works very well. ”If This Be All” is a slow and pretty track in ¾ time and ”The Moorland Ghost” that has now been arranged into a very waltz-like version was originally released on This Is Where We Disappear by The Green Pajamas. Personally I prefer the original. ”A Reminiscence” is a soft and melancholic piano piece and the lightly starting ”Love Song (Beneath Far Gondal's Foreign Sky)” an excellently growing ballad. The album is finished with the minimal, pretty and emotional ”A Lonely Thing”. Beneath Far Gondal's Foreign Sky is in every aspect a wonderful, romantic album that gets you into other worlds so I’d definitely advice you to check it out. The initial, limited pressing of 500 copies is numbered and initialed by the artists…
