Jack Jeffery: The Constant That Remains
Self-released CD

Last year I reviewed Passage to Agadir, and album by American Jack Jeffery and now the man has a new album out. The Constant That Remains is clearly better than its predecessor, and includes even wonderful, psychedelic moments. The guy sings, plays acoustic and electric guitars as well as programs the keyboards and drums. His influences include for example Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, The Moody Blues, Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills & Nash and John Lennon, and you can sense all these in his music.

The album has 12 mostly quite peaceful, melodic and beautiful tracks. The hypnotic and great opener ”We Need It Back (The Modern Dream)” also includes some distorted guitar. One of the best pieces is the dreamy ”Rearranged” that starts off with acoustic guitar and synthesizer, starts carefully moving and ends up in psychedelic bliss. The Beatles / Lennon influences are most prominent on the melodic song ”A Plea to a Dreamer” and ”Gavotte for African Steel Guitar” is an instrumental that closes on folk and even classical music. “Fade Away” is a slow and beautiful track that later on grows more pompous and works very well, the instrumental ”The Sorius Wall” is like late 70’s Pink Floyd. . ”Everything Changes” is a good, hypnotic and 60’s / 70’s spirited song that sort of reminds me of Spirit, for example. ”Trust the Dial” is just a short experimental piece with radio samples and ”Valencian Cosmos” a more ambient instrumental that shows Jeffery’s love for Tangerine Dream. There are some sequencers also on the following instrumental called ”Ascendancy” that accidently has lots of similarities to an old track called ”Time Space Continuum” by my own band Dark Sun! After the minimal and short interlude ”The Constant in the Chaos” comes the album’s final piece ”Carry On” that again has some acoustic and electric guitar and vocals. The track that grows towards the end has a positive vibe and it brings to mind for example Alan Parsons or later The Moody Blues. This is very successful album, particularly when you consider the fact that Jack has done everything by himself. Check it out!
