The Movements: Follow
Oops, here’s once again one pretty much delayed review, I’m so sorry… Last year the wild Swedish garage rock band The Movements celebrated their 10th birthday and to honor the occasion this splendid vinyl album was released. The A side composes of previously unreleased tracks that were recorded in between 2002 and 2010 and on the B side we’ve got the band’s first EP Drag Me Up from 2004 that has been sold-out for some time now.
The Movements have plenty of energy and attitude and their music always makes you feel good and frantic, whether you hear it live or from a record. The band’s sound is largely based on 60’s/70’s psychedelic garage rock but I wouldn’t still label them exactly as a retro band. The going is again mostly fast, but there are a few more atmospheric pieces in there as well. The more recent material is presented with the really fast and pounding “My Confession”, the garage punk styled, psychedelic ”Vicious & Vast”, the fierce ”In My Time” that brings to mind The Fuzztones and the bit more relaxed “Red Headed Girl”. The energetic “You’re Alone” that also has some little darker tones is an outtake from the The World, the Flesh and the Devil session from 2008 and the A side’s last, long and at first pretty and slow song ”You Don’t Know” was recorded already in 2002 during the Drag Me Down sessions. This one also has some psychedelic, jamming and even freaky stuff in the middle. Also these outtakes are really good tracks!
Like many others I guess, I has not previously heard the Drag Me Up EP, so there is very interesting material also on side B. ”Thinking too Fast” rocks really fast as the title suggests, the bit slower “Drag Me Up” is a catchier and more melodic, excellent song where the importance of organ is a bit emphasized. “It’s Time to Go” pounds and bangs tightly but the chorus is more melodic stuff. The simple and straight-forward garage rock blast “I Feel Groovy” forces you to dance and “Give Your Head” is a rock’n’roll number with some piano as well. “CCtv” is a little more peaceful rhythm’n’blues track that remains me of The Kinks or The Pretty Things. This is not a bad release at all and worth getting if you’re into psychedelic, raucous garage rock!
