Sendelica: The Satori in Elegance of the Majestic Stonegazer
|
FRG Records (CD012)
Sendelica, the psychedelic space rock band from Wales even visited Psychotropic Caravan Club last winter and those who found their way to the gig seemed to be as convinced as I that this is a killer band. Led by guitarist Peter Bingham together with bass player Glenda Pescado, this mostly instrumental band has released lots of CD’s, CD-R’s and DVD’s along the years as well as been featured on several vinyl releases on Fruits de Mer. In addition, they have toured the US and Europe always taking in suitable friends to the line-up along the way. They also always have guests in the studio and on this new album that will be released next month have as any as seven of them. The one that is involved the most is the drummer Colin Consterdine and in addition to him we’ve got some keyboards, saxophone, flute and for example sitar.
Musically Sendelica continues on the same road that has proven to be a good one. So the album includes lengthy and pretty heavy mid-tempo space jams where Peter’s tight guitar playing really shines as well as beautiful, more atmospheric and softly floating tracks. They do everything with style and, even more importantly, with emotion. There are eight tracks on the CD four of which form a great whole entitled ”Satori in Elegance”. The album starts off with the over nine-minute ”Magical Ninin” where Pete is let loose to show what he can do with his guitar. The electronics enhance the space vibes in a nice way and I’m sure the Hawkwind fans will like this. Also featuring some flute, the magnificent “Aetheraland” catches the band at their more atmospheric mode and ”Satori in Elegance Part 1” begins the album’s main piece in a laid-back mood while the distant saxophone brings in some cosmic jazz vibe. The following part starts to rock out in a heavy manner and includes some killer psych jamming. The over 15-minute-long ”Satori in Elegance Part 3” starts off as spacey ambient that then changes into a bit dub spirited stuff. This track has programmed drums and lots of keyboards which fits it the mood perfectly. There are also some blues influences in there. The work’s last part is a shorter, floating and vibrating piece. ”Preseli Daze” is a long and heavy acid rock jam that will do the trick for fans of old The Bevis Frond, Outskirts of Infinity or Earthless, for that matter. This one again also has some sax and it works out very well. The album is finished with the more composed heavy track entitled ”The Majestic Stonegazer” and it’s one of the best pieces on the CD. There would have still been some room for one or two songs with vocals, like Sendelica’s superb interpretation of The Amboy Dukes’ ”Journey to the Center of the Mind” but on the other hand the album now forms a totally own, new whole. The fans won’t be disappointed and they are already taking in preorders! As usual, 100 copies of the CD will come with a limited edition DVD…
