Arenna: Beats of Olarizu
Nasoni Records (NASONI 108CD)

Arenna is a new Spanish heavy stoner/grunge rock band that released this debut album of theirs last year on Nasoni. The band really knows how to write groovy riffs and especially the bit more melodic vocals remind me of several grunge bands, although the music is more psychedelic and heavier per se. I really like the guitar solos and overall sound. The CD includes six tracks. The couple of first tracks ”Morning Light” and ”Receiving the Liquid Writings” are heavy and a bit gloomier stoner rock that has some apparent Black Sabbath influences. Great stuff! ”Fall of the Crosses” is a little more positive 70’s styled hard rock that I don’t like that much. The long ”Eclipse” is at first atmospheric, softer stuff with acoustic guitar and also includes some organ. After a few minutes they kick the fuzz pedals on but the going stays pretty peaceful. ”The Strangest of Lives” is heavy and groovy riffing again but there is a more mellow jam part later on too. The best, most psychedelic and longest track is the CD’s final piece ”Metamorphosis in Ic (0,9168 g/cm3)” that at first brings to mind Colour Haze. This monster track has truly hypnotic, brain-frying jamming and a great, lysergic vibe. The actual song ends in bubbling space sounds and after some silence there’s still some small-scale atmospherics. Amazing! The double vinyl version has three more bonus tracks…
