James Brown: Live in America
Gonzo Multimedia (HST085DVD)

James brown, the godfather of soul, really doesn’t need any introductions, and it seems that his popularity has only grown after his death in 2006. This one-hour live gig was originally released on VHS 20 years ago, so it was about time to get the material also into DVD format. The big band naturally also features a brass section the most famous member possibly being Maceo Parker who played with Brown already in the 60’s and later on in Parliament and Funkadelic. All the rest are brilliantly professional as well, of course. The 15 tracks naturally include for example the hits ”I Got You (I Feel Good)”, ”Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and ”It’s a Man’s Man’s World”, but “(I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine” is missing. The going is mostly sweaty and tight funk grooving but there is also room for a couple of more peaceful soul pieces like ”Georgia on My Mind” and ”It’s a Man’s Man’s World”. Brown changes his outfit every now and then, he really gets that sweaty. The audience goes nuts, and what else could you do during a show by such a show man? The package also includes the gig on CD so I guess this is a must-have for all the fans.
