Psychic TV / PTV3: Mother Sky vs. Alien Sky
|
Vanity Case Records (VC-10)
This must be one of the most interesting maxi singles last year. On this beautiful, heaven-blue slab of vinyl limited to 500 copies Genesis P-Orridge and crew offers two excellent, long and lysergic tracks. In a way this is the second part to their 2010 maxi Alien Brain vs. Maggot Brain continuing the band’s idea of choosing one psychedelic classic important to them, transform it a bit by for example adding some original lyrics and also record their own track that somehow goes with the same theme and put that on the flip side. This is a really great idea! The ultra-hypnotic kraut rock track “Mother Sky” by the legendary Can has been recently covered for example by Germany’s Vibravoid, but psychic TV also makes wonders with this song. The strongly jam-spirited piece has a tight rhythm section, a perfect amount of great organ work, excellent, acidic solo guitar and everything is iced by Genesis P-Orridge’s narcotic, at times even very powerful vocals that have the necessary effects. The going gets even pretty wild at times and I really like this! Over 16 minutes of psychedelic bliss.
Another very mind-expanding number is the bit softer and pretty “Alien Sky” on the other side. This one also has some violin. Here Psychic TV maybe goes a little closer to their roots and we also get some Bauhaus vibe. There is a superb, more intense section towards the end, as well. This track is over 15 minutes in length too so you’ll get your money’s worth of stuff for sure. It’s great to see (and hear!) that Psychic TV / PTV3 is in full flight again and this release would be perfect for dj use for example! I’m looking forward to the third in this trilogy.
