Hawkwind: USA Tour 1989-1990
Hawk Records (HAWKVP48DVD)

This DVD includes a healthy dose of Hawkwind’s live material from over 20 years ago. You can find 24 tracks and a couple of interviews on these two DVD’s. It’s a bit pity that technically this recording is rather modest and the material on the first DVD was shot with just one hand-held camera (VHS?). The second disc that starts off with a jam (that is wrongly titled as “Master of the Universe”) is edited to look a bit more appealing and also has some more intimate footage from soundcheck and backstage as well as some space graphics etc. 1989-1990 just happens to be the era when I finally went totally nuts about the music and ethos of Hawkwind so this DVD naturally works for me…

The track selection includes back then brand-new compositions (for example ”Out of the Shadows”, ”TV Suicide”, ”Back in the Box”, ”Treadmill”), a few earlier 80’s songs (”Needle Gun”, ”Heads”…) as well as classics from the 70’s (”Assault & Battery”, ”The Golden Void”, “Brainstorm”, ”Time We Left This World Today” etc.) and they all work well. There are two versions of some of the tracks but it doesn’t matter. As is often the case with Voiceprint, the track list is not correct and the last three titles on the cover (”Assassins of Allah”, ”Images” and ”Reefer Madness”) are missing from the DVD. Personally I think that this line-up (Brock, Davey, Bainbridge, Chadwick, Wishart) was one of the best. Even though the picture quality is sort of weak especially on the first disc it still gives you pretty good idea of what kind of a visual experience too Hawkwind was at that time with all psychedelic background visuals and dancers. Bridget Wishart is a nice addition as a performance artist as well as singer. It’s also cool to watch for example the young, long-haired Davey to rock out. If you enjoy Hawkwind’s Palace Springs and California Brainstorm live albums I’m sure you’ll like the music here if you don’t require hi-fi quality. This release mostly still has historical value and I can only recommend it to the die-hard fans and collectors.
