Mina is a bit experimental, at times also a little heavier alternative rock/pop band from the Tampere region in Finland and they’ve been playing together for a few years now. This is their first demo and includes three tracks. The space theme on the attached info sheet doesn’t in my ears really come down to the music itself, at least not in the space rock/psychedelia sense. The demo’s first cut “Destroyer” rocks hard a bit in the stoner rock style but the vocal melodies are guaranteed commercial stuff. By the way, at first I thought the singer to be female since he has such a high-pitched, nasal voice. Great singer, though. There are plenty of heavy riffs in there, the rhythm sections kicks ass just fine and also included are some nice keyboard things. I would think that this song might have some potential to be a radio hit of some degree. Then we’ve got a slower, soft and a bit experimental pop piece “Cosmic Superstar” that also includes some programming. I think I can hear some Mew and some other little progressive and experimental, modern commercial rock/pop bands like Radiohead in this one. Also the third song ”Everything Falls Apart” starts off pretty peacefully and the vocals are soft and almost whispered. The chorus has some pretty heavy guitar in it and the Smashing Pumpkins influences that I had already sensed come through. Not a bad song at all. I’m sure they have carefully polished this demo with ProTools and it does sound exactly like you’d expect a demo to sound like in the modern age. I don’t really think I’ll ever really get excited about this band but they have potential to succeed somewhere close to mainstream.
