Kom: Berry White
Denovali Records (den53)

Kom is a band formed by four men from Germany and every second year they go into a small cottage in the woods to make some exquisite, beautiful, touching and fragile music apparently using at least acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, piano, vibraphone, bass, drums and vocals. The melancholic atmosphere brings to mind some of the post rock bands but Kom doesn’t really fit in that category. The vocals are closer to indie rock, I guess, and the moods and melodies indicate a link to the 60’s pop music at times. There are also some short instrumentals included. Due to the acoustic, reduced (for example there is no distortion on the guitar) feel of the album there are also some contact points to folk and there are also some psychedelic elements. The music is in every case airy, light, pure and rather minimal. The 35-minute-long Berry White is the band’s first actual full-length but their third release. The album includes 12 short tracks that work out great as a whole. This is truly beautiful, easy-listening stuff but still pretty interesting and atmospheric. The album is available both on CD as well as on three different, very limited vinyl editions. Gorgeous stuff!
