Rick Danko and Richard Manuel/ Rick Danko: Live at O´Tooles Tavern 1985/At Dylan’s Café 1987
Voiceprint Records (BEARVP112CD/BEARVP113CD)

I’ve never been a fan of The Band but nobody can deny that they did some remarkable work as Bob Dylan’s band and on their own releasing several albums since the 60’s. Here we’ve got two CD’s including intimate, minimal bar gigs by The Band members. Danko and Manuel toured quite a lot in the early 80’s as an acoustic duo. Live at O´Tooles Tavern, Scranton, PA. December 13 1985 includes 11 songs including The Band classics like ”Unfaithful Servant”, ”King Harvest” and ”Chest Fever” that I think is perhaps the best piece on this album. Both men are singing, Manuel plays keyboards and Danko guitar and occasionally also bass, I guess. The sound quality is pretty okay, the performance has lots of emotion in it, but still this doesn’t have that much to offer for me. There is often some nice banter in between the songs.

At Dylan´s Cafe, Washington DC, December 8 1987 CD features just Danko. Manuel had hanged himself the previous year after a long dependency on alcohol and cocaine. This gig that was released last year as a double CD and recorded from the soundboard has been circulating among the fans but now the sound quality has apparently been somewhat improved and according to the info on the back cover there should be five tracks from Bob Morgofin’s opening gig as a bonus. In fact these songs are not on the album… On the other hand, the original tape that’s been circulated among the fans seems to have just 27 tracks while this release has 38, although several songs are there two times. Voiceprint really should check these Bear Records’ facts a bit more carefully before printing. Anyway, this package includes plenty of stuff like ”Stage Flight”, ”The Weight”, ”Canadian Drifwood” and ”Mystery Train” for all the fans of The Band and Rick Danko. Apparently this was one of the best solo gigs by Danko who died in 1999.
