Panic Room: Satellite
Voiceprint Records (FMCD002)

Panic Room is a new UK-based rock band featuring present and former members of Mostly Autumn, Karnataka and Fish’s band. As you might have guessed, their music has some progressive elements as well as influences from folk, jazz and world music, but mainly this is a band making rather commercial, melodic modern rock. The band’s female singer Anne-Marie Helder has a very emotional, beautiful and tuneful, strong voice and all the musicians are really skilled. Satellite is Panic Room’s second album and includes 11 tracks of good rock music that you could easily hear on the radio and not want to change the channel. The guitar riffs are at times even pretty hard hitting and solos quite tight and technical while the bass brings in some jazz tones a bit like in Porcupine Tree. The rich keyboard sounds give lots of different colours to the music. The drummer has been influenced by Neil Peart of Rush among others. There are also some softer, peaceful pop songs in there like “The Fall” and “Sunshine” that both also include acoustic guitar. The cover art might suggest that this is a psychedelic space rock band but unfortunately the sci-fi/space theme is mostly present only in some of the lyrics. My favorites are the darker, quite heavy “Dark Star” and the album’s longest, a bit hypnotic ending track “Satellite”. This is not exactly my kind of music but it’s still pretty okay for this kind of alternative stuff that’s trying to reach the bigger audiences.
