Tribe after Tribe: Live at Burg Herzberg Festival 2009
Herzberg Verlag (v-hb-030)

Tribe after Tribe is a South-African acid rock band that I had not prior to this album even heard about. Anyway, the group has been led by the guitarist/singer Robbi Robb since the 80’s and they have released several albums. This CD includes four tracks (47 minutes) from the performance at Burg Herzberg Festival last year and it seems the band was on fire during their late night show. The music of Tribe after Tribe is a pretty interesting combination of Western acid rock and African rhythms and it’s obvious it works very well live. At least on this gig the line-up also includes a bassist, organ/synth player, a drummer and a woman playing keyboards, percussion and doing some vocals. Also at least the last, very rhythmical track “Out of Control” somebody (Andre?) plays djembe and also Robbi himself joins the magical world of percussion at one point while the audience dances wildly. Wow! This and the hypnotic, psychedelic opening track “Bury Me” are also included as videos and these sure are enjoyable to watch. Robbi’s guitar playing is mind-expanding in a great way and he uses quite a lot of effects, especially delay. The Hammond B3 organ is played with power and the synthesizers are also used to create some atmospheric and spacey sonic structures. In addition to the two aforementioned tracks the CD also has a long and jamming version of Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” where Robbi plays some excellent solos and a bit shorter, mystical and tribal number “Subway”. Tribe after Tribe surely played a great gig and this CD makes you interested to hear their studio albums as well.
