Various Artists: Fill Your Hearts with Joy and Love a Lot, Das Burg Herzberg Festival Live

 Germany’s Burg Herzberg Festival is an over 40 years old hippie gathering that has included lots of famous and a bit more unknown bands mostly in the prog, psychedelia, kraut rock, hard rock and blues vein. There have been many live albums recorded at these festivals along the years and this is the latest. Fill Your Hearts with Joy and Love a Lot compiles together 9 tracks by 9 performers and most of the tracks are long. It features the following legends who already started in the late 60’s/early 70’s: Manfred Mann’s Earth Band (the classic ”Mighty Quinn” also including some of Purple’s ”Smoke on the Water”) Arthur Brown with The Hamburg Blues Band (performing his 60’s hit ”Fire”), the amazing Gong (”Magic Mother Invocation/Master Builder”), Edgar Broughton Band (”Out Demons Out”) as well as kraut rock forefathers Faust (”Den tiefsten Schlaf”) and Guru Guru (”Living in the Woods”). So the newer bands are just Norwegian Motorpsycho (“Burghogs”), Tribe after Tribe (“Bury Me”) whose gig from last year was also just prior to this released in its entirety and Ornah-Mental whose one festival gig has been previously released on CD as well. Personally I was especially thrilled about the magical Gong number, but I must say that for example the energetic Motorpsycho jam works really well too! Unfortunately Hawkwind, who have played at the festival a few times, is not included, but of course there have been tons of other incredible bands in there as well… I would have liked to get some info about the recording times of the individual tracks but they seem to originate from different years, anyway. As a whole this compilation gives a good picture of what this festival is all about. The sound quality is excellent on all the numbers and the audience seems to be enthusiastic. This year’s edition just last weekend also included some superb bands (Hawkwind, Astra, Vibravoid etc…),so let’s hope that there are more releases in the pipeline again! I only wish I could join the fun on location one of these days.
