Renaissance: Kings and Queens (DVD)
Voiceprint Records (VPDVD67)

Well here comes some really rare candy for all the Renaissance fans… This 42-minute-long DVD includes two tracks by the band’s original line-up, ”Island” and ”Kings and Queens”. These songs were recorded live in studio for German television on January the 31st in 1970, and this is the only piece of film material there apparently is by the original line-up. There were several cameras in use and the picture and sound quality is very good. The classical music influence is clearly audible on these tracks. There were lots of frequent line-up changes going on in the early phase of the band and the section shot for Belgian television in late 1970 has no original members left! This line-up Terry Crowe, Binky Cullom, Terry Slade, Neil Corner, John Tout and Michael Dunford) only lasted for a couple of months, so these five songs are really rare stuff, especially since these tapes were thought to have disappeared ages ago. There were also some psychedelic structures in the studio as was common during the time and the footage also includes short interview pieces and sections of the band members walking on some local field. The colours have faded a bit along the years, but that doesn’t reduce the watching enjoyment. I must also state that the female singer Binky Cullom was a really hot looking cat… Four of these tracks are from the first two Renaissance albums but the last one is without doubt the most interesting. ”Widdicombe Fair” is in fact an old English folk song that the band had arranged for the short tour and it has never recorded in studio or been available anywhere else! In addition, the band gets a pretty wild jam going on and rocks surprisingly hard. This DVD includes great and early material by this prog band that later on got very famous in the mid 70’s while Annie Haslam joined as a permanent female singer.
