Void Generator: Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic
Phonosphera Records (ph 01)

Void Generator is an over ten-year-old heavy and psychedelic stoner/space rock/metal band from Rome. I have previously reviewed their great, self-released album We Have Found the Space (2006) and was really excited when they sent me their new album that was released earlier this year. The band has been influenced by bands like Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Amon Düül II, Monster Magnet, Black Sabbath, King Crimson, QOTSA, Motorpsycho, Colour Haze, Gong, Van der Graaf Generator, King Crimson and Kyuss, and these astronauts have gained quite a lot of experience of inter-galactic trips along the years.

Now the tracks have grown even much longer and the album actually has just three official songs on it. The over 15-minute-long ”Message from the Galactic Federation” presents the heavier side of the band and does rock hard in the stoner rock style. It still has some synthesizer and audio generator to guarantee the psychedelic vibes. The vocals work out great and there are also some progressive hooks in there. The end is experimental, hallucinatory soundscapes. “The Morning” gets closer to Pink Floyd and also reminds me of Led Zeppelin to a certain degree, although it’s basically a hypnotic, mid-tempo desert rock number. Towards the end the track evolves into rather cosmic spheres in a great way. The over 18-minute-long “The Eternaut” starts of quite minimally with bass and drums, but begins to rock with a heavy, quite slow stoner rock touch in a couple of minutes. The strong vocals also join in. Then they get more peaceful again, and we hear some quite exciting, progressive synth soloing. After the second more rocking section there is a guitar solo and then we’ve got some psychedelic space noises in the end. After about three minutes of silence the CD also includes another, untitled, long and slow bonus track that has for example lots of great solo guitar and finally some soft synthesizer sounds. I must say that I like this excellent album a lot! It’s worth checking out if you like groups like The First Band from Outer Space that combine heavier elements to space rock and prog.
