Iroha & Fragment: Bittersweet
Denovali Records(den49)

This is a very nice collaboration by Iroha (that is a new project of Final’s founding member Andy Swan from Birmingham) and French drone/ambient/shoegaze artist Fragment (Thierry Arnal). Iroha also features Justin Broadrick (Jesu, Godflesh) and Nic Bullen (Napalm Death, Scorn). This 45-minutye-long split that was released both on limited vinyl and CD has six tracks one of which is a remix and one a collaboration. The music is slow, atmospheric, heavy and very melancholic. The crunchy guitars and celestial keyboards build a steady background for the really beautiful vocal melodies. Iroha’s a tad more positive ”Wish Upon A Star” starts off the disc and brings to mind the slowcore of King Black Acid although the guitar sound is heavier. The track includes whispering vocals and also a great, simple but highly effective keyboard pattern. Great! The other Iroha number ”Something’s Got To Give” is slower and heavier but just as great stuff. The collaborative piece “Bittersweet” is a majestic and sadly beautiful number that is over seven-minute-long. It also has a bit more ambient, atmospheric phase and I do like this song a lot too. The album’s longest track is Fragment’s “Turning Around” that is stylistically close to the Iroha songs. It’s beautiful and melancholic, slow-paced post rock/metal stuff with soft, touching vocals. It has both heavier and more atmospheric parts. The really slow, a bit less heavy but very melancholic “Carved In The Sand” begins in a minimal mode and has some amazing vibes. Then we still have a remix of the title track “Bittersweet” and this version has bit more electronic attitude. This is an excellent, epic, beautiful and at the same time heavy package that can be recommended for all those who like slow, moody post rock and post metal, especially Jesu fans. You can also download the album for free.
