EpochÈ: Between the Storms
|
Self-released CD EP (THR-1001)
EpochÈ is a band from Espoo, Finland, playing dark, atmospheric classic rock/metal. Two of the guys from this trio used to be in a hard rock band Madhouse together already in the early 80’s. The sound of EpochÈ also includes some progressive and psychedelic elements and their music is most of the time quite peaceful while the keyboards bring in much more mystical, gloomy vibes. In addition to the dark, short whispering intro this EP includes five tracks. The slow ”Laser Dawn” would be doom metal if it had just a bit heavier sound. The melodic, great and strong vocals bring to mind many of the classic 80’s heavy metal acts or the debut album by Candlemass, for example. It’s gloomy and atmospheric stuff and there is also an acoustic part in the middle. The shorter “Madhouse Window” is a mystical instrumental that evolves from an acoustic ballad into dark, pretty slow rock in a great way and also includes some superb solo guitar work. The mid-tempo “Gamma Vox” is an adventure somewhere in between Led Zeppelin and the bit more experimental metal bands from the 80’s I guess. “Between the Storms” is a bit bluesy, atmospheric instrumental and things get even more bluesy with the gloomy “Listen to the Wind” that occasionally reminds me of the soundtrack music from David Lynch’s movies and TV-series. This one has some great vocals again and also some psychedelia, excellent! This EP sounds quite promising in all aspects so I’d like to hear a full-album by this band one of these days. Then they would probably need to include some faster material, as well.
