The :Egocentrics: Love Fear Choices and Astronauts
Nasoni Records (NASONI 098-2 CD)

The :Egocentrics is a great, atmospheric and instrumental psychedelic stoner rock trio from Timisoara, Romania. I reviewed their Mystic Initiation demo earlier this year and I really liked it. Soon after that the band sent me a new CD-R with four long tracks on it. I hadn’t reviewed that yet when Nasoni sent me an official CD of the album in question that they had just released, so obviously other people like this band too!

The album begins with the atmospheric and magnificent “Spacewulf” that occasionally explodes into heavy fuzz rock but is mostly very soft and groovy going. This track reminds me quite a lot of Colour Haze. It also includes some psychedelic space sounds and that of course always pleases me… Amazing moods! The track “20 12” was included on my Astral Visions internet radio show in March and this wild jam rocks just fine in the Earthless vein including excellent playing by the whole band. ”Bright Dawn of the Soul” is a bit bluesy, heavy stoner/desert rock number that has a more relaxed part in the middle. At times the going gets wild and energetic until the music finally fades out in millions of atoms into the cosmos. The album’s longest track is the over 13 min “Mystic Initiation” that I really like a lot. The faster jamming works out really well and the guitar player Brenn blasts away some excellent solos. The track has a bit lighter, hallucinatory groove in the middle. There are also some spoken samples by for example Terence McKenna and Aldous Huxley, which increases the psychedelic atmosphere in a great way. The heavy guitar riffs are playing the main role, though. This is possibly the best piece on the album but all the over 10-minute-long tracks are top-notch stuff. The band is playing like there’s no tomorrow and the album was recorded live in the studio in 12 hours apart from some overdubs. If you want to hear some real, skillful jam spirit in the 70’s style and like bands like Earthless, Colour Haze and Cause Sui you should get this album immediately. Congratulations also to Nasoni for such a fine signing!
