Vibravoid: Triptamine CD/DVD
Nasoni Records (NASONI 94-2CD/DVD)

It’s been 10 years since the Düsseldorf psych kings Vibravoid released their first album 2001. The first CD version came out in 2000, but personally I didn’t find the band until Nasoni’s gorgeous double vinyl version in 2001. The band has been one of my absolute favorites ever since, and I naturally must have all the possible releases. The band has really treated their fans very well especially with limited vinyl releases, both in 12” and 7” formats. There have been as many as 4 volumes in the Triptamine series including mostly demos, live tracks and a couple of soundtrack pieces. Now some of those Triptamine tracks see the light of day in CD format for the first time along with many other rarities.

For me, the best part of this release is that it also includes four so far totally unreleased demos, so I’ll go through them fast first. The whole album starts off with “Leave It Behind” that is a really hypnotic, psychedelic and druggy number that moves forward pretty fast. Christian sings in a quite exiting way on this one. It’s unbelievable, that this song has not made it to one of their albums, since I really like it a lot. The sound quality is excellent and not at all demo-like, and there are plenty of psychedelic effects. “Sucked by Sound” is an instrumental experiment without drums just like the very spacey ambient piece “Cosmochaos”. The CD section is finished with a rather different version of ”Random Generated Future”, a song that made it to the Distortions album as well. All the three tracks from the Krautrock Sensation cover EP put out by the English Fruits de Mer Records are included and as unedited versions! So now we get to hear for example a several times longer version of ”Rauchkraut”… Great! The Christmas on Earth EP is also presented in its entirety and you should note that ”Christmas on Earth” and ”Save My Soul” are different versions than those on the Distortions album. So, from the actual Triptamine volumes we’ve only got four tracks, but two of these are very long. Composed for an old silent flick, “Ali Baba” is a mystical, peaceful but rather experimental and of course psychedelic instrumental, as well as the bit Spacemen 3 styled “Vibraphased” that actually is just amazing stuff. “Black Light Mushrooms” is an up-beat, groovy and cool 60’s styled psych jam and ”Children of the Void” a relaxing, Eastern raga that includes some sitar. Too bad that the soundtrack number ”Wizard of Oz” that originally appeared on Triptamine Vol. 2 didn’t fit on the CD, since it’s really hot stuff. The Pink Floyd EP What Colour Is Pink would of course also been a very nice addition but maybe some other time, then. Also, there is none of the radio live material from Triptamine Vol. 3 included, but that kind of stuff is covered on the DVD that comes along the CD.

First of all, the DVD has seven live tracks from last September from Bielefeld, Germany, shot professionally for German television. The lights are bright due to the TV shooting which of course doesn’t leave room for the psychedelic background projections, but the band plays so well and with such a lysergic touch that they will blow your head off! It’s exceptionally great to get to see closely how Christian conjures up unbelievably trippy sounds from his numerous effect boxes. The whole band is in great shape and seems to be enjoying the performance. In addition to their originals the set also includes “Tomorrow Never Knows” by The Beatles and Silver Apples’ “Oscillations” and these both work out very well. As bonus material, the DVD also includes ”Playing with Beyus” that was shot with several camcorders at out Psychotropic Caravan II Festival in Helsinki as well as Can’s “Mother Sky” from Athens. Technically these might not be top-notch, but the psychedelic atmosphere of the gigs comes across very well! All in all, this Triptamine CD/DVD package is really worth getting for all the fans even if you have all the limited vinyl on your shelf. This is also well suited as the first step towards understanding the mind-expanding world of Vibravoid. Love Is Freedom!
