Depth Beyond One’s: Red Lines Entwined
|
Omakustanne –CD (DBOCD001)
Depth Beyond One’s is an Oulu-based modern metal band formed in 2003 and their music combines beautiful, fragile melodies, flush keyboards, heavy guitars, experimental, technical touch and even blast beat and crawling vocals. It has similarities with prog metal, more commercial heavy rock etc. Red Lines Entwined was made with their own recourses and on their own terms and is the band’s first full-length album that has been preceded by two demo EP’s. The theme on the album is apparently the relationship between a man and a women and the possibility of change.
The album includes ten tracks. These boys know how to play, and they also have creativity for composing and arrangement work. This kind of modern, technical metal just isn’t exactly my kind of thing. One of the best pieces surely is the pretty, melodic and emotional “Fig Leaves” that might also have commercial potential. There are several other peaceful tracks on the CD too. Other highlight of the album might be its longest, very varied piece ”Under the Shadow of the Tree”. The mostly hectic and tight, 9:30-long album’s title track should please for example the System of a Down fans. The song “Black Years” brings to mind Dream Theater a bit and maybe even Fantomas. I think I can occasionally hear some Faith No More and Mr. Bungle in the music, as well, but at times they blast away in a heavier style with pounding double bass drums in the style of Sonata Arctica, Nightwish or Children of Bodom. The odd, heavy guitar chords alternate with melodic choruses. The fellows have been able to put together a very well working package, but maybe the presence of an outsider producer would have helped to polish the sonic world towards perfection. This is a very personal and creative band, that’s for sure.
