Loimann: Towards Higher Consciousness
One Voice Recordings (OVR0900)

Loimann is a metal trio from Torino, Italy. They have been influenced by at least stoner rock, doom metal, Type O Negative and Pantera-like metal and they also have a little bit of psychedelic elements. If I have understood it right, Towards Higher Consciousness is their first official full-length album, and a very successful one considering that. The band has been together for about ten years though, and you can hear it from the way they play together.

The album starts off with the experimental “Intro – Post Bucolic Adunanza” that includes for example the sound of rain. The mid-tempo, rather groovy “Flashover” rocks nicely a bit in the Pantera style. “Lycopodium” is a bit faster track and you can hear some Pantera influence here too as well as some Kyuss. “Black Ethanol” continues along the same paths but also includes a gloomier, Black Sabbath-like riff that works very well. The doom metal influences are let loose on the number ”T.H.C. (Towards Higher Consciousness)” that does occasionally have some faster going with a groovy touch, as well. The rest of the album has pretty much these same elements, occasionally I’m also reminded of Orange Goblin and the great instrumental ”Cryptic Euphoria” does sound a bit like Wino’s bands The Hidden Hand and The Obsessed or even Revelation, although with more crushing sound. The excellent guitar sounds on the album are very crunchy and heavy and the vocals are very suitable for this kind of music. The band also makes good songs with some effective riffs, but I have never really liked those Pantera styled, jerky and jumpy riffs. The heavier and especially the gloomier sections work out just fine, though. I also like album’s excellent, a bit Giger styled cover art.
