Causa Sui: Summer Sessions Vol. 1 – 3
Elektrohasch Records (CD139)

Causa Sui is one of Denmark’s best psychedelic rock bands and they have released several excellent studio albums in a relatively short time and gained quite a lot of underground fame. The band’s music that has been influenced by late 60’s and early 70’s rock is heavy, wild and rocking when needed, but they also know how to be atmospheric and are capable of cosmic, psychedelic jam trips as well. Lately the band has been concentrating on instrumental improvisations and that’s exactly what’s included on these three discs that were originally released on limited vinyl albums that were sold out in weeks. I was lucky to order them all in time myself, but this 3-CD deluxe package will also please all the fans I’m sure.

The first disc has four jams and the first one (”Visions of Summer”) lasts for even 24 minutes and 39 seconds. The track grows gradually with a laid-back groove. At times they go for heavier stoner rock a bit in the Colour Haze style, but the more relaxed going that includes a suitable amount of psychedelic elements like electronics is in the fore. The faster solo-part in the end that also has organ is true classic rock at its best! ”Red Sun in June” starts off in very relaxed and sunny mood but rocks a bit heavier towards the end. The more energetic ”Portixeddu” has a really effective, groovy rhythm that sort of reminds me of Santana. The saxophone brings in some nice free jazz atmosphere closer to the end and this hypnotic number also has some psychedelic effects, of course. “Soledad” begins very peacefully again, but before the three-minute-marker the band goes for a heavy, a bit bluesy stoner rocking. Great!

Vol. 2 begins with the short and beautiful acoustic piece “Sun Prayer” and after that “Rip Ride” is like a combination of Hendrix and Cream played in a bit stoner rock style. The sax does give some jazzier edge again starting from the middle of the track. The 14-minute-long “The Open Road” is nice jam boogie stuff in the classic hard rock style also including the sax once again. The ending is more relaxed floating. ”Cincittá” is a soft number that also has some acoustic guitar and beautiful organ. The 23-minute-long ”Tropic of Capricorn” starts off pretty peacefully including cosmic synth effects and soon we’re in for some seriously intense jamming. There is a long, more serene phase somewhere in the middle and the sax creates some amazing atmospheres again. They rock harder in the end. Excellent stuff!

The third volume begins peacefully with a psychedelic jam called “Eugenie”. This time the sax is on from the very beginning. This is a wonderfully hypnotic piece that gets heavier towards the end. “Red Valley” evolves in a great way from relaxed moods to Colour Haze styled heavy stoner/desert rock, ”Lonesome Traveller” is a shorter, rather minimal and more airy number. ”Santa Sangre” has some hallucinogenic space synth sounds and a swinging kraut rock beat as well as some very good saxophone solos. The album is finished with the soft and flowing, superb track entitled ”Venice by the Sea”. Summer Sessions Vol. 1 – 3 is, all in all, an excellent package of skillful and inventive psychedelic jamming and it can be recommended to all the band’s fans who missed the vinyl LP’s and why not also to someone who only now is dying to find out what Cause Sui is all about. After this one they will want to get the two previous albums as well...
