The Heads/White Hills: Collisions Volume.1
Rocket Recordings (LAUNCH 033)

This record that includes two long tracks was one of the best releases last year. The Heads from Bristol have been exploding minds with their loud, heavy and psychedelic fuzz rock since the early 90’s and has released many albums, EP’s and singles several of which are now highly collectable. The New York-based White Hills is absolutely one of the greatest new-comers on the guitar-driven, psychedelic space rock scene and I am deeply in love with this band.

It’s worth knowing, that the labels on the vinyl went the wrong way at the press. You can tell which song is which since the White Hills number has vocals and The Heads one is an instrumental. First, we’ve got a wild and psychedelic jam called ”Camden Brain Slurry” by the noisy psychedelia veterans The Heads who played in Finland for the first time in February at our Psychotropic Caravan Festival. This UK psych monster blasts out so hot stuff with two guitars, bass and drums that it will melt your brains. There’s plenty of heavy fuzz guitar and although the track doesn’t really seem to be going in any specific direction (or just because of that) its mind-expanding capacities are very vast. At one point they go in a quite experimental way a bit like Can or Faust and we also get to hear some pretty hypnotic groove. Then they let the track grow again into wilder spheres and I’m reminded of Space Ritual era Hawkwind. Oh yeah! This might not be the cream of the cream of The Heads but really good stuff, anyway!

The White Hill’s druggy ”I Will Find Peace of Mind”. starts off rather slowly and hypnotically and soon there is also some vocals. In addition to Dave, Ego and Kid they had Pierre Auntour in the studio, but you might have difficulties in trying to hear his synthesizers beneath all the wall of guitars. The guitars have a really juicy layer of hallucinogenic effects and this will for sure psych you out. The divine solos rip through your ears and realities, amazing! The track keeps quite slow, heavy and consciousness-expanding for its whole duration. There are still some field-recordings with human voices in the end. I’m overwhelmed.

This kind of split releases are always interesting, and especially when we’re talking about two of the top modern psych acts this naturally is a must-have for all the friends of heavy and fuzz-filled acid rock. There are 700 copies pressed on black vinyl and 300 on orange, and 150 of the latter come with a numbered poster in addition to the very nice insert that all the copies include. Those without a vinyl player might want to know that there are also 100 promo CD copies out there if you want to pay big money on Ebay.
