Inverse Gravity Vehicle: Magnetizer
Levity Disc 3

Well ,this is an interesting case alright. Have you ever heard of Professor J. R. R. Searl and his inventions The Searl Effect Generator (S.E.G.) and Inverse Gravity Vehicle? These are connected to inversion of gravity, clean energy and interplanetary travel and lots of other cool stuff. This all is based on the way to produce electronic energy by means of magnetic waves that Prof. Searl come up with in1946 and it’s called The Searl Effect. Sounds totally sci-fi, right? Apparently the good Professor really exists, or at least there is some information about him and his inventions on the internet. Part of the deal of course is that donations through PayPal are accepted to get the “inverse gravity vehicle” into mass production and by donating you’ll get your name shown on their list.

Now I’m not really sure how seriously to take all this, but at least a couple of British musicians have been interested enough in Searl to form a project called Inverse Gravity Vehicle and already released several albums as well based on the man’s ideas. The project’s main figures are ex-Ozric Tentacles man Joie Hinton who’s now known for his electro/ambient/dance band Eat Static and Deborah Knights who has a very beautiful voice, writes cool lyrics and also plays on the album. In addition, this album features several guests for example from bands Ozric Tentacles and Here & Now. Magnetizer is a double CD that is close to 160 minutes in length so there is a lot of material on it. The music is produced mainly electronically but there are also some real instruments in there like trumpet, bass, viola, guitar and cello and several tracks also have vocals. Some of the music sounds like Eat Static, at times I’m reminded of Massive Attack among other things. There are also some World Music influences, for example. Some of the tracks are very floating ambient like the airy ”Squares and the Healing Machine”. The programmed sequence patterns occasionally bring to mind even Tangerine Dream. We get to hear Ed Wynne’s psychedelic guitar work on the album’s second number ”Predator Control”. ”Money Can’t Buy Dimensions” is a bit oppressive piece but the atmosphere on the album is very peaceful and relaxing most of the time, anyway. There is just enough mind-expanding and experimental touch to keep me interested. One of the best tracks is the second to last number ”Follow the Eagle” that is a long, beautiful and atmospheric piece with some cello in the mix. The band is in the process of raising donations to form a base for Searl Effect Technology in Kent, UK for Prof. Searl, good luck in getting the £500,000 together!
