Polytoxicomane Philharmonie: Go Ape
|
Nasori Records (Nasoni 080)
The Frankfurt/Main based freakout-krautjazz quintet Polytoxicomane Philharmonia released their third album last year and I must say that these guys are just getting better as time passes on. The Gong and Frank Zappa influences are still clearly audible in the music, but the band still has managed to create a unique brew of their own that is psychedelic, progressive, nicely wacky and also ingenious in its own way. The music still includes guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, spacey synthesizers and horns as well as excellent female and male vocals. I should emphasize already at this point that the band is formed by exceptionally proficient musicians.
The album starts off with the over 14-minute-long ”Dervish” that really does make the listener’s mind spin in druggy spheres in a very effective manner. In the middle they go to very cosmic places and then there’s some more serene stuff and a bluesy solo part towards the end. Amazing! ”Fine Animal Gorilla” is a relatively peaceful and atmospheric track that still has pretty intense charge. One of my favorites is the progressive “Spoonful of Majoun” that brings to mind Gong and has a very interesting emotional mood. The first disc is finished with the pretty laid-back, long ”Catwalk for Little Monsters” that does get heavier towards the end. The synapses really pop and crack on the quite experimental number ”Open Letter to Albert H.”, ”Apollo-Jive Beneath the Moon” rocks in a bit jazzy style again. The album’s shortest piece is the 4:43 long experimental, cosmic and hallucinogenic interlude “Etude #27” and this excellent album ends with the almost 19-minute-long “Dryad Girl” that includes both mystical, dreamy atmospheres and heavier rocking plus hypnotic floating. Imagination has no boundaries on this great number and the band has really done a great job.
Go Ape is in all aspects a brilliant example of the fact that people still make open-minded, imaginative and truly psychedelic music today. The sound quality is superb and an honorable mention must be given for the packaging of the double CD that was released early this year: it comes packed inside a high-quality, sci-fi/LSD spirited comic book with thick and glossy pages! The album is naturally also available on vinyl including a limited color version. This is absolutely worth getting!
