The Nigua: Will They Understand
Stargaze International (STG 712)

The Nigua is a mostly instrumental project by two Spanish guitarists (Toni Garrido: lead guitar, programming, vocals, Lidya Boteva: guitars) and this album released on Stone Island’s sub-label is their first. The album was released already in 2008 but I somehow only succeeded in reviewing it now (sorry!). Toni and Lidva label their music as progressive rock or fantasy rock and this actually is rather progressive stuff. There are also some Latin rhythms and a sort of fusion rock touch not forgetting the guitar hero-type solos. According to the band’s MySpace site their influences include for example classical composers, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Steve Vai.

The album includes ten mainly rather short compositions. It starts off quite promisingly with the horror rock piece ”The Door” that suggest that we’re in for some occult going but unfortunately this is not the case. The next couple of tracks are light and entertaining, pretty trivial stuff, ”Carnasex” grooves tighter. The guitar solos asre really skillful and technical. “Jaggarta” brings to mind Santana, the slow and atmospheric “Poetry Mountain” sounds a bit like 80’s Pink Floyd. “Pleasure” has both soft and more rocking stuff bringing to mind Camel or some other 70’s prog bands occasionally. The album’s longest track is almost 11-minute “I Want” that also has some effected vocals. This is probably one of the album’s most progressive pieces and reminds me of Frank Zappa. The quite atmospheric and entertaining ”Laurelindorinan” could well be from one of the Allan Holdsworth solo albums and then we’ve still got an under-minute-long joke piece “A-a”. For those you like technical and fast guitar solos this album will have a lot to give but personally I’m not that interested in this kind of stuff. Sorry.
