Kamel: S/T 12”
|
Green Ghost Records (GGR-004)
Kamel was a desert/stoner/grunge/blues/indie rock formed in 2002 in Lahti. They decided to quit last year. They have put out this five-track EP as a testament and the fans can have their dose in vinyl format for the first time. This 12” comes in a black, perforated cover that includes a paper that briefly explains the purpose of the release: to give the band’s friends one more opportunity to hear their music and now even in vinyl format. Previously they have released one CD EP and split mini CD with Horse (not called Hi-Horse) I have reviewed these splendid releases and also went to see the band live as often as possible and the boys have also played at our club years ago.
The A side begins with the crunchy, hypnotically rocking ”Chasing Tumbleweed” that always was one of the band’s live favorites. Not an overtöy heavy number, but very effective stuff anyway. The included narration increases the psychedelic atmosphere, as well as the heavier ending that also has some keyboards. A great track! Another old Kamel classic is of course the pretty fast and really well rocking “Super Morocco” where the singers goes for a bit more snotty style which suites the song just fine. This can be labeled as stoner/desert rock for a good cause. After these two pretty straight-forward tracks ”Jezebel” is a more special, slower and somewhat mystically-oriented piece that also has some grunge band influences shining through, but in a good way. The B side’s first track ”The Thrill Is Gone” is a song I don’t even remember ever hearing. It goes somewhere in the middle of stoner rock, grunge and indie rock and works pretty well including hard riffs, powerful singing and also keyboards. This actually brings to mind Faith No More a little. “Muddy Waters” is apparently Kamel’s homage to this blues legend and this quite gloomy, heavy track does indeed have some blues influences, especially in the lyrics. Towards the end the track speeds up and then slows down again ending in pretty wild and also psychedelic stoner rock moods. This vinyl release is a great ending for Kamel’s career the only little minus being the lack of a proper cover, but that of course doesn’t affect the music itself. The disbanding of Kamel was a little setback for Finnish music scene but luckily we can expect some more music by the members’ new projects…
