Mountain of Judgement: S/T
Mountain of Judgement was a psychedelic doom metal project that started in 2003 in North Carolina when Chad Davis (U.S. Christmas, Hour of 13, Agrabatti etc.) and three friends locked themselves in a rehearsal place with a huge amount of weed. The recordings for this album also started already that same year with the full band, but after the band broke up Chad finished the album in 2009. I’m really happy that he did complete the album because this is really good stuff combining Sleep styled, really heavy stoner/doom metal and psychedelic, spacey synthesizers. There are also enough melodies in there, especially on vocals. In addition to the heavier idols they’ve been influenced by at least Hawkwind and Ash Ra Temple who both get a special thanks on the album’s booklet.
The album begins with the close to 12-minute-long, crushingly heavy, gloomy and slow “Neptunes Reign” that brings to mind Sleep’s Dopesmoker/Jerusalem with its repetitive riff and hypnotic, simple vocal melody. The space synth sounds increase the psychedelic atmosphere in a great way, amazing! The about nine-minute-long ”Magic Eye” is also a slow one and starts off in a more atmospheric way but the merciless wall of distortion kicks in before two minutes have passed. There is some faster going towards the end reminding me of Dream Death or Cathedral for example and the synths swirl constantly all around the place in a hallucinogenic way. Also “The Witch” has some heavy riffiing but this one has some more melodic vocals, as well. ”One Within the Beyond” is a short, instrumental space ambient piece, and the heavy bulldozing continues again on the next tracks entitled ”Bringer of Infinity” and ”Globule”. Excellent stuff! The last two pieces (”The Burning Stone-Neptunes Reign” and “Magic Eye”) apparently originate from an earlier session and these bonus cuts have a bit rawer but still very good. These bring to mind even more Dreamt Death and almost Hellhammer as well, although this is much more psychedelic stuff and also these tracks include synthesizer. This is a great album, and the unholy union of really heavy, brutal guitar riffs and psychedelic, soaring space synths works really well for me.
