Janne Tuomi: Resonance/Elg
|
FMR Records (FMRCD266-0908/FMRCD280-0709)
Janne Janne Tuomi is a Finnish percussionist/drummer and in the Pori region he has played at least with Markku Peltola’s band, Rakhim, Rättö ja Lehtisalo and at times also with Circle and, if I remember correctly, sometimes also with Pharaoh Overlord. In addition to these bands that might be a bit more familiar to Psychotropic Zone readers he has played everything from free jazz to folk and classical music and performed for example with Antti Kotokoski, Marzi Nyman, Raymond Bon, John Dorn, Daunik Lazlo, Seppo Kantonen and numerous others. The guy has studied music in Tampere, Odense and Los Angeles and at the moment he teaches percussion in Pori. He has been on several albums and his first solo album Approaching was released in 2004 on the Pori-based Ektro Records. I have not heard this disc, but at least Resonance and Elg include just different kinds of percussion played by Janne. A solo album by a percussionist is a rather unknown, hard to approach object for me, but luckily Tuomi’s material is pretty listenable stuff, although very free form.
Resonance has nine tracks that clock in together closer to 50 minutes. The music is mostly very quiet and serene including lots of cymbals and only occasionally some more intense banging that never grows too noisy, after all. I would think this is mostly improvised stuff but you never know for sure with these jazz dudes. The atmosphere is at times also pretty psychedelic, which is great. Elg has just two long pieces and I guess this could be labeled as a mini album. The almost 22-minute-long title track begins with a cymbal rhythm and kicks up a fuss in an even very mind-expanding, experimental way later on. This is closer to drone and even noise but I still like this stuff more than the material on Resonance. The close to 14-minute-long “Suo” has some very subdued, ambient soundscapes that you must listen to very closely. Also this track has a quite psychedelic mood and apparently the recordings have been somewhat manipulated in the mixing or there is also some synthesizer towards the end or something. Anyway, Elg is the more interesting of these records, at least to my ears. Janne Tuomi is a gifted and open-minded percussionist, which is proved by these discs among other things.
