Oblivious: Goons and Masters
|
Transubstans Records (Trans051)
I have said this before, but Sweden really seems to have lots of this kind of a more or less 70’s styled hard rock/stoner bands… And why not. Hailing from Linkoping, Oblivious has played together for several years now and prior to this full-length they have recorded four demos. They have also played live a lot in the Southern Sweden with for example Witchcraft, Dozer and Graveyard. The classic hard rock (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pentagram, Led Zeppelin etc.) and more modern stoner rock (Queens of the Stoneage, Clutch, Kyuss, Dozer etc.) are combined in an effective way in their sound. They have a rather groovy and melodic touch in their music-making, and the tracks have enough hooks and ideas to maintain the interest.
The 50-minute-long album has 10 songs. “Ego Boy” brings to mind Grand Funk Railroad or Captain Beyond a bit. The singer has a little gravelly voice which suits the music fine and they also have some backing vocals. “Throne” rocks in a sort of Deep Purple style, although it also has some stoner rock influences. ”Red Eyed Goon” includes groovy riffs and nice fuzz soloing. “Master of Time” is at first a more atmospheric piece that starts to rock heavier a bit in the style of Kyuss and Dozer later on. ”Kickin’ and Screamin’” is a fast, tightly rocking song that has some pretty psychedelic guitar solos as well as melody. “Bring It on Me” is heavy boogie, whereas “Dead End Night” is a more peaceful piece with some keyboards as well. It does get heavier after three and a half minutes, though. One of my favorites is the really tight stoner piece ”Boiling Brain” that I also played at Roadburn this year. ”Bide Your Time” could almost be from the new Brant Bjork album and has some nice, atmospheric jamming in the middle. Then we still have “Blind Faith” that starts off as a beautiful ballad but also changes soon heavier still maintaining the melancholic, melodic vibe. This is not a bad album at all, but the band’s music is not really that original or psychedelic/and/or/heavy enough for my taste.
