Black Lizard and the Liquid Plastic Castles: Rather Eight Miles High than Six Feet Under
|
Self-released CD-R EP
Black Lizard and the Liquid Plastic Castles is a 60’s styled hippie rock project by the two guitar players of Helsinki-based psychedelic garage rock band The Distortions. They’ve been influenced by at least Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, The Stones etc. as well as the shoegazers of the later decades. Apparently, these guys usually work by themselves in the studio, but the live band also features other people. Occasionally they use a drum machine and the acoustic guitars are usually the most dominant factor in their sound. This CD-R EP includes six tracks of rather peaceful and laid-back music. “Shine High” starts off with a sitar drone, and then has some drum machine, acoustic guitar, vocals and bass. Sitar is also included on several other songs. This is a very nice, simple and catchy number that is almost eight minutes in length. The quite minimal ”Distorted Dream” is powered by percussion and also has for example organ and tremolo guitar. This reminds me of some of post-Barrett Floyd songs. The pretty minimal style is continued with ”Morning Bliss” that has about just acoustic guitar and vocals, as well as some keyboards and only a little bit of rhythm. The drum machine makes its return on the track entitled “Adore Me” and this is a bit more snotty number that reminds me of The Rolling Stones and some garage styled acts. A great number! ”Her Velvet Meadows” is again a more tranquil, excellent and hippie-styled piece that has some Eastern atmosphere. This about 30-minute-long EP is finished with the at first soft and quiet “In Love” that grows into nicely psychedelic and hypnotic spheres after the middle. You can get this very pleasant EP for free by just asking for a copy, and the guys have also been recording some new material so be ready!
