Vibravoid: What Colour Is Pink? EP
Fruits de Mer (Volume 10)

The latest offering by this German 60’s styled psychedelia monster is a fabulous Pink Floyd cover EP. This pink seven inch limited to 500 copies was recorded in January 2010 using just vintage equipment (Vox Phantom guitar, Vox Phantom bass, Vox Super Continental, Mellotron, Roland Space Echo, percussions) and includes the tracks ”Set the Controls for the Heart of The Sun”, ”Let There Be More Light” and ”Saucerful of Secrets”. So we’re dwelling in the cosmic and psychedelic moods of the second Pink Floyd album here. This is the second Vibravoid EP on Fruits de Mer following the amazing Kraut Rock Sensation EP that was sold out pretty quick and also this new release was gone almost immediately at least at Fruits de Mer. Three hundred copies also include a nice, numbered insert, just to let all you die-hard collectors know.

I guess ”Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” is one of the most covered Pink Floyd song, maybe due to its simple but very effective structure, mystical atmosphere and overall nature that leaves plenty of room for jamming. As has happened on the Vibravoid gigs, this track can easily be stretched to a very long jam… The version on this EP is six-and-a-half-minute long, and that’s about as long as you can put on a 7” vinyl. The atmosphere on this version is pretty loyal to the original number, but if possible, this is even more psychedelic. The organ is playing a more important role here than usual and there are plenty of mind-expanding effects in use, especially so in vocals that work out really well. A totally mind-blowing version! Another superbly and very successfully conducted number is ”Let There Be More Light” as well. The tremolo guitar sound is really convincing, the rhythm section does a flawless job and the organ creates a very authentic feel. The vocals are maybe a tad too low in the mix and it sounds like it’s somebody else than Christian singing but I’m not sure. The experimental, ultra psychedelic and cosmic ”Saucerful of Secrets” has, due to the time limitations of the single format, been trimmed down from the closer to 12 minutes of the original to about three and a half minutes, but Vibravoid still manages to mediate all the essential elements of the track. This is top-notch space freak-out ending with a marvelous Mellotron/organ bliss. This surely is at least one of Vibravoid’s as well as Fruits de Mer’s best releases and you should really try to hunt down a copy very fast!
