Dali’s Llama: Raw Is Real
Dali’s Llama Records (DLP013)

Dali’s Llama from Palm Springs, California, keeps on releasing albums in a continuous flow and that’s just fine since I always enjoy hearing more of their raw, heavy desert/stoner/sludge/doom/hard rock. The band’s influences include for example The Stookes, Mudhoney, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, Bad Religion, Dinosaur Jr., Neil Young and Clutch. According to their bass player Erica Huskey, their eight album Raw Is real is “a little darker and angrier” than the previous one, and I’d say she got that right. The album is also the best I’ve heard by them so far. The producer was once again the legendary Scott Reeder and it would be hard to find a man more suitable for this job. Now the line-up seems to also include another guitar player in addition to the song-smith/singer/guitarist Zach Huskey and I think there is more guitar on the album, which is great. Previously I was asking for more solos. The drums are still beaten with killer precision and power by Jeff Howe.

“Raw Is Real” starts off the album with a heavy and groovy touch and will cause some serious head banging live, I’m sure. “Theocrazy” has a nice tom-tom beat and some really heavy, gloomy riffs that remind me of the Finnish band Mana Mana. “Hell No” is a quite slow number that starts to rock wilder in the great solo part closer to the end. Wow! The influence of The Stooges and MC5 is probably most obvious on the shorter track entitled “Grump”. “Always” is an exciting, a bit more atmospheric piece and I actually like it a lot. “Slug Man” rocks hard again and with a heavy hand, “Eve’s Navel” is a mid-paced, heavy and darker track. ”Syphilization” is harsh and heavy bulldozer, “Blackout” a little slower riff monster. Finally, we’ve got the album’s longest, instrumental track “Fluids” that also includes some slide guitar. This is maybe as close to Black Sabbath and doom metal as they’ll get, although the latter half of the track is just psychedelic guitar feedback. I think that Raw Is Real forms a really good whole and I’d expect it to go down well with all those who like heavy sludge rock from the desert.
