Teemu Elon Puhuvat Eläimet: Kointähden siirtokunta
|
Helmi Levyt (Helmi034)
Kointähden siirtokunta is the second album by this Pori-based band led by early Circle guitarist Teemu Elo. All the elements (folk, rock, prog, singer-songwriter, kraut…)that were featured on the Hämmästyttävät Puhuvat Eläimet debut a couple of years ago are still intact, but I’m happy to say that this new album has even more of that wild, psychedelic jam feel that is emphasized on gigs in a great way. In addition to Teemu, the band still features Mika Rättö (drums, Circle, Rättö ja Lehtisalo etc.), Teemu’s brother Mikko Elo (bass, Kuusumun Profeetta, Low Life Rock’n’Roll Philosophers), Tuomas Grönlund (guitar), Alpo Nummelin (percussion) and Ville Leinonen (keyboards). Also questing on the album are Ion Buinovschi (violin on the first four tracks) and on three tracks the jouhikko virtuoso Pekka Käppi.
Like the debut, also this album includes playful, nursery rhyme styled fantasy material (for example ”Lohikäärmelaulu”, ”Leijona, kummitus ja poliisi”). ”Sisar Yönvarjo” is a jazzy piece with some groovy jamming. One of the catchiest pieces is the opener ”Kuiskausten kesä”, but my favorites still are the darker, mystical, very psychedelic and occasionally also pretty heavy “Musta uni” that gains some more great atmosphere by the violin as well as the 15-minute-long “Kun kuolen” that has the band jamming in a quite free-wheeling, 70’s styled way in cosmic spheres. ”Isabella (Kuukari stomp)” brings to mind Tuomari Nurmio and I think I can also at times hear some influences by the cream of the Finnish rock (Kauko Röyhkä, Hassinen Kone, Juice etc.), although Teemu denied ever really listening to these artist when I mentioned the fact to him. ”Karnevaalikulkue” is a more peaceful, atmospheric tune and then there are also a couple of instrumentals, the little over one-minute-long, hazy album’s title track and the album’s last number ”Kätketty järjestys” that’s been edited from the same jam. All in all, Kointähden siirtokunta is an excellent package of original and honest music that surely can touch many of us. Although I do like Teemu’s compositions as well as his lyrics very much, the band still is at its best during the instrumental, hypnotic jams. Worth checking out!
