Kaarna: Spring (Demo Version)
|
Self-released CD-R
It took me too long to put this early in-progress version of their forthcoming album that was sent to me some times last year by a band called Kaarna into my CD player. It has no cover artwork or track titles, but the info sheet that came with tells us that this improvisational, instrumental trio is formed by Mikko iivanainen (electric guitar), Mikko Nurmi (selectric bass, compositions) and Tatu Henttonen (drums). All these fellows seem to be very active musicians and they play in many other bands as well. Especially the guitarist is very gifted and he has played for example with Raoul Björkenheim. The letter that came with the demo mentions Jimi Hendrix, but I’m much more reminded of many jazz/rock/fusion virtuosos. The 42-minute-long demo has 6 tracks that apparently have some pre-composed material as well as free, jazzy improvisation. The first track is just fusion improvisation, the second one is very peaceful, minimal stuff until the middle, but gets heavier in the end also including some psychedelic elements. The third track is more like prog bringing to mind at least King Crimson and also a bit the output of John McLaughlin. The going gets pretty wild towards the end! The next track is again more laid-back, jazzy improvisation and the same goes for the last two numbers as well. This is pretty interesting group all right, even though this kind of jazzier stuff is not usually exactly my kind of thing.
