Sula Bassana & Modulfix: Pingpong
|
Sulatron Records (ST CDR 008)
This CD-R is the latest offering by a duo formed by Zone Six members Dave Schmidt (synthesizer, guitar, bass, drum beats, percussion) and Martin Schorn (synthesizer, guitar, bass, voice, cover painting). Like the music of their main band, this is highly psychedelic, improvisation-based stuff that will most definitely get you “out there”. There are only three tracks on this 79-minute-long disc, so they are very long… “Martinhuana” is a cool, floating piece including guitar, bass, synthesizer, percussion and bits of lysergic human voice and brings to mind the more ethereal and cosmic kraut rock bands from the late 60’s and early 70’s (Cosmic Jokers, Ash Ra Temple, Popol Vuh, you got the picture). This is an excellent, hypnotic and highly hallucinogenic trip! “Radiodub” has at first some German radio samples (or is it Martin?) and psychedelic synth sounds that are joined by slow, electronic drum beat and bass after a while. There is also some very psychedelic guitar in the mix. This one has a very nice ambience. Next up is the over 44-minute-long title track “Pingpong” that also features two guests (Ele: sounds & voice, Christian Wilke: synthesizer & voice). This mostly electronic psych monster starts off in a rather minimal way with some weird sounds until the electronic beat begins slowly around the five-minute-marker. The additional, manipulated human voices are a nice bonus, and there is also some very enjoyable guitar in there at times. I’m sure the guys had a lot of fun putting this ambient mind-fuck together… This is some of the most mind-altering stuff I’ve heard for a while. The music was improvised, performed and produced at Amöbenklangraum, Berlin, in the mid to late 90’s and this CD-R is limited to just 100 copies.
