Darwinbitch: Ore
Digitalis Industries (ACE016)

Darwinbitch is a solo project by Oakland, California habitant Marielle V. Jakobsons where she creates dark, melancholic soundscapes using violin and oscillators. Marielle also plays in Myrmyr with Agnes Zelag, in TrioMetrik and forms a duo called Date Palms along with Gregg Kowalsky. Ore is the first CD by Darwinbitch and there was a now sold-out tape release before that.

The 45-minute-long album has seven tracks on it. Jakobssons has for example studied computer music composition in France and electronic music in the US and these studies are joined in a great way with her earlier classical music skills. The music of Darwinbitch is organic but at the same time hazily cool and electronic. You can hear the melancholic, folky violin melodies through the layers of sine wave oscillators and the whole works out surprisingly well. The album is full of very peaceful, dreamy and flowing, experimental stuff. The darkest track is the even menacing ”Flames in Backened Sky”. The atmosphere is not overtly psychedelic, but surreal and weird, anyway. This album takes a few listening before you can really get into its avant-garde world, but will reward the attentive explorer. This interesting disc comes in a magnificent cardboard cover printed with three metallic colors and is a limited edition of 500 copies.
