Taiga Remains: Wax Canopy
|
Digitalis Industries (ACE015)
Taiga Remains is an experimental drone project by Student of Decay label’s Alex Cobb. This CD is possibly the latest Taiga Remains product and before that there has been a huge amount of releases since 2005 mostly on limited edition cassettes or CD-R’s, none of which I have heard. Wax Cacophony is a 44-minute-long album that has six very peaceful, meditative tracks ranging in length from under two minutes to over 11 and a half minutes. This ambient, very slowly evolving sonic landscape is created with guitars, electronics, organ, field recordings and tapes. All the sounds are webbed together in way that makes the instruments and other sound sources pretty unidentifiable, apart perhaps from the organ. My favorite piece on the CD is possibly the longest track ”Returning Breath” that fills your mind with strange, frozen images. On “Leaf Green Bodies” the buzzing sound threatens to turn to noise, but only gets close. The other tracks (”Truth and Moonlight”, ”Hovever”, ”Unhinged, Opaque”, ”Skyward”) are pretty pleasant, dream-like and floating and I enjoy listening this CD while going to sleep or in other, tranquil and dim-lit circumstances. The special edition that came with a 3” that has about 18 minutes of extra material and was limited to 100 copies is already sold out.
