Low Life Rock’n’Roll Philosophers: Welcome to the Dawn of a New Time
|
Ololevyt (OLOCD-002)
Welcome to the Dawn of a New Time is the third album by this Pori-based group that has in its ranks musicians that also play in other bands (Kuusumun Profeetta, Eleanoora Roosenholm, Teemu Elon Puhuvat Eläimet). Indie rock, prog/art rock and pop and psychedelic elements are combined in a fine way in the band’s sound. Their female singer Noora Tommila has grown into a skillful figure head along the years but also Mikko Elo’s baritone guitar and the magnificent keyboard patterns of Tero Fagerström shine through, not to forgetting the effective rhythm section.
This new album, the first one for Solmu Recordings sub-label Ololevyt, includes almost one hour’s worth of material that differs from perhaps the most pop-like the band has made to almost Motörhead-styled wild banging (just listen to the last half of “Psychosis”) and kraut rock –spirited jamming. The atmospheric, beautiful and melancholic stuff is still the main emphasis. The pretty ballad ”Sunflower Forest” also has some violin. The most radio-friendly material on the album might perhaps include the shorter pieces ”Words and Melodies”, ”Comrade Stalin” and ”Violent Calm”. My personal favorites still are “Cul-de-sac” with its hypnotic elements, the album’s longest, quite progressive number ”Rags and Pieces”, the bit Husky Rescue-like ”Birthmark”, the at times wilder and interesting “Chantelle” and “Jewel Elephant” that has a brilliant ending including violin. This great album comes in a nice digipak that also includes a lyric booklet.
