Vespero: Rito
RAIG (R024 CD)

This young band comes from the Southern Russia and has since 2004 released several CD-R’s prior to this CD, but I hadn’t heard about them before. Thanks to RAIG for releasing new Russian rock music since it seems there are some really good bands out there! Vespero is for sure one of the best, at least their Rito CD works very well. The band’s music is pretty psychedelic and progressive occasionally bringing to mind for example Gong. The album is mostly instrumental, but there is also some female voice and a bit of male narration.

”Inverno” begins is a sinister way including guitar feedback, strings etc. Then follows some ambient synthesiser stuff and there’s also a hallucinatory speech sample in the end. An excellent, spacey and psychedelic intro! ”Triptych: to the Falling Sun” starts off peacefully and in a dark way with synth noises and light cymbals. There are also some keyboards. After about one minute the drums and the bass join in and the comp is rather fast and progressive. The track includes floating guitars and hazy atmospheres. It’s a really great number that has plenty of synthesisers. After three minutes there comes a relaxed part including some jazzy moods, guitar soloing (also backwards) and violin. This reminds me a little of the German band Polytoxicomane Philharmonie. Towards the end they go faster in 6/4 time and there is some violin again. “Rito” begins with flute and synth burbling. Then there’s some small-scale rhythm and the track grows little by little. This is real psych rock and also has some post rock feel to it. Before the five-minute-marker there comes a reggae part and dreamy, hallucinatory going. This works! There is a male narration in the end and the track speeds up. ”Inna’s Burst in Tears”.has beautiful guitar work and a peaceful, floating atmosphere. This is jamming post/psych rock track that builds up as it progresses. The female vocals are a good addition. A truly great, a bit progressive number! The very end has just some manipulated vocals.

”Crabs Ashore” starts off with water sounds and very soft guitar. The track really starts to go somewhere gradually before two minutes have passed. It has a rather fast, but at first minimal comp. The going is tight, but floating and dream-like at the same time. The end is very serene again. The next track “Skat” also begins in a peaceful manner. This one has a soft bass line, pretty guitar and flowing synth sounds. A beautiful post rock instrumental that has a great atmosphere! There’s not that much drums in there. “Silence Breath Echo” is a dreamy ambient piece with synths. Closer to the end the drums and some hazy vocals join in. It has a very psychedelic feel that sort of reminds me of Zone Six or early Porcupine Tree. I wonder if this is jam based stuff? The end is totally ambient. The last track ”Ambience in Blue/Altarage to the Thunder” is the longest on the album (over 13 minutes) and begins with some beautiful pizzicato guitar that is joined by bass and synthesiser. There’s some experimental jamming in the middle. Weird and atmospheric stuff. Then they go back to the opening theme but this time there’s also some violin. The track starts to float in one chord next and there’s some female voice in there as well. I’m a bit reminded of Gong. The drums join in towards the end and the track has a reggae-like mood. This is a superb album and comes highly recommended!
