U.S. Christmas: Salt the Wound
|
R.A.I.G. (RO20)
U.S. Christmas is an American, previously totally unknown to me heavy acid/psych rock band, and Salt the Wound is their first actual album after a couple of CD-R’s. This album has a LOT of guitars, and the guitars are heavy. The thing is, the album features three guitar players one of which also plays Theremin, the other also synth while the third one does the vocals, as well. In addition, the band has a bass player and a drummer too, of course.
The album begins slowly and heavily with “Lazarus” that has Dave Wyndorf-like snotty vocals, low-pitched synthesizer and loud, trippy guitar solo. “Death by Horses” starts off in a very hazy, druggy atmosphere but soon starts to really rock. This is heavy psych/stoner rock with space noises and aggressive, effected vocals. This is really tight stuff, the best track on the album! This reminds me a bit of Hawkwind and La Ira de Dios. “New War” has a ¾ riding comp and it’s a rather raw and hard track with distorted vocals. More in the Monster Magnet like stoner rock vein is the slow and heavy “Devil’s Flower” that has some serious space effects. Then follows the instrumental “Thin the Heard” that is a bit of boogie like stoner rock with Southern influences. Another instrumental “Norpo” comes next being a tad lighter, slow and psychedelic number with some occasional distorted guitars, as well. The last studio recording of the album is “Black Snake” that is a little more minimal and a bit different track that has for example a great, laid-back twin guitar solo and synthesizer noises. There are also three live tracks on the album with a bit lower quality but they prove that this band from the Appalachian Mountains also works and explodes some heads live. U.S. Christmas truly is a band to keep an eye on..
