Viima: Ajatuksia maailman laidalta
|
Viima Records (VIIMA-001)
This is one of the best prog albums that I’ve heard in years. Viima is a band from Turku and I think that they’ve managed to put together everything that is essential in the 70’s progressive rock. Oh well, they still miss the original Mellotron… Ajatuksia mailman laidalta (Thoughts from the Edge of the World in English) includes beautiful, a bit folk spirited stuff reminding me of the first King Crimson album, little heavier parts, great compositions, excellent melodies and harmonies, very good sound, diverse enough instrumentation, marvellous playing and a clear voiced female singer. The tracks are varied enough, but not overtly difficult or complex.
The album begins with the sound of rain that is soon joined by airy acoustic guitar. This is a nice, sunny track called “Leijonan syksy”. Nice and stylish solos in this one. I’m a bit reminded of Gentle Giant. The Renaissance influences are brought vividly forth with the title track of the album that follows next. Especially on this track the vocals sound really great. Excellent song that has room for piano and folk styled melodies. And the analogue synthesisers always make me hot! “Ilmalaiva Italia” has some pretty and melancholic ballad elements and, in the middle, also some wilder stuff sounding like King Crimson. “Meri” starts with some ocean sounds and transparent synthesiser sounds that are soon joined by a very bright guitar and rather high-pitched singing. Also on this marvellous track I’m again reminded of Renaissance and also partly Genesis. At times the going gets very progressive, and the flute solo is really nice. “Luuttomat” features a pretty and sad part played with acoustic guitar with great vocals and also a more progressive part with sax. A superb track, and the lyrics too! The album ends magnificently with “Johdatus” that is a bit friskier and faster number with positive atmosphere and nice melodies. After the guitar solo the end of the track is very piano driven and a very good ending for this marvellous record! All the progressive rock fans should definitely get this album.
